Have you heard about the COSON Week?

The Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) holds an entire week of spectacular events from the 19th to the 25th of May, 2013. COSON is the sole Collective Management Organisation approved by the Nigerian Copyright Commission to act on behalf of authors, composers, performers, publishers of musical works and owners of sound recordings in Nigeria.

The train of events kicked off yesterday with 'COSON in the Church' which held at the Household of God church at Oregun, Lagos. The event was hosted by Mr. Patrick Doyle and his lovely wife Ireti Doyle and featured Nigeria's best gospel artistes such as Panam Percy Paul, Evang. Ebenezer Obey, Buchi, Bouqui and many ministers of the gospel to offer prayers for the Nation. The red carpet was graced by stakeholders in the music and movie industries and also in government, diplomacy and business.

The COSON Week continued today with the 'COSON LECTURE' which was chaired by the Honourable Justice A.B Gumel, a Justice of the Court of Appeal who is known for his sound judgments on intellectual property dating as far back as the 1980's when he decided the case between Charly Boy and Multi-Choice. The Lecture was delivered by a guest lecturer from the Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo, Professor Helge Ronning who is also the Chairman of the Norwegian Copyright Development Association (NORCODE). The theme for the lecture was 'INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, COMMUNICATIONS, INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT'. Prof. Ronning gave a brilliant presentation which was very enlightening to the audience made up of artistes, legal practitioners, government officials and other stakeholders in the industry. After the guest lecture, four panelists including Professor Bankole Sodipo Dean of Law at BABCOCK UNIVERSITY and Barr. Chris Nkwocha from the NIGERIAN COPYRIGHT COMMISSION broke down the contents of the Guest lecture to the audience in simpler terms and applied same to our local context. Questions and Comments were also taken from the Audience. It was a highly educative exercise and COSON was commended by the attendees for its efforts.

The COSON Week continues tomorrow with 'COSON ON THE STREETS' which will involve the best Nigerian Stars controlling traffic, cleaning the drains, driving garbage trucks, cleaning the drains, feeding the hungry etc. It is essentially a day when fans get to meet their favorite artistes who in turn get to give back to society.

On Wednesday May 22nd, the 'COSON GREEN BALL' holds at the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos which will feature the best in the entertainment industry and the historic launch of the COSON MUSIC FOUNDATION. The foundation is a non-profit trust which seeks to promote music and provide for Nigerian artistes in distress who have no pension gratuity or insurance scheme and will also fund also for music education. The launch of the foundation is the crux of the COSON WEEK.

On Thursday, May 23rd, the 'COSON ALL-STARS TABLE-TENNIS BLOW OUT' finale holds at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium. COSON at the Mosque holds on Friday May 24th at the Central Mosque, Lagos.

The grand finale, the premier edition of the COSON Song Awards, holds on Saturday, May 25th at the New Expo Hall, Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. The event which is to be hosted by Popular 'WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE', Frank Edoho host promises to be a grand one.

If you missed any of the events, it's not too late to get involved. COSON is definitely working and for many Nigerians, its slogan 'let the music pay' is gradually becoming a tangible reality.

Keep being creative!

  1. very good information!!. I really wondered that you were different from all other bloggers as your discussion centered around unconventional topics. I had to read through everything until i found your bio. Indeed, it is only a lawyer or an entertainment magazine that would blog a subject like this. My name is Ayoola Akinbo and am a 400 level law student in University of Lagos. I really have a passion for the legal profession and more passionate about entertainment law and practice. I would be grateful if you can be my mentor as my would-be mentor is deceased (Late Efere Ozako). I would also like to come for the COSON event. You can contact me on akinboayo@gmail.com or akinbo.ayoola@yahoo.com. I would really like to read from you Ma. God bless your work towards the advancement of the entertainment industry. have a nice day.

    1. Thanks Ayoola. Great to read from you an I'm honored as well. IP, Media and Entertainment Law are gradually becoming the most interesting and beneficial areas of law ever. It's good you already have a grip on what you wanna do. Some of the COSON programmes are strictly by invitation (IV FROM COSON), but COSON ON THE STREETS holding today is open. The areas include Amuwo Odofin, Ikeja, Mangoro, Surulere, Island and TBS. Be on the look out! You can follow COSON on Twitter @COSONNG and myself on @lolawilliams02. You can tweet at them, who knows you may be able to get an IV for the other events. I wish you the best!
