AMAA 2015: AFRICA ON THE RISE

The 11th edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) last Saturday, 26 September 2015 in South Africa.  The event was graced with many stakeholders in the African Movie Industry, including those based abroad. According to the organisers of the AMAAs, they had “received over 800 movie entries from over 60 countries.... mostly within Africa, South America, United States and North America.’’ Thus, the process of selecting the final nominees was quite tasking. The nominees for the Award were then announced at an exclusive event which held in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A on June 20, 2015.

Favourite wins this year include ‘October 1’ for best Nigerian Film, Achievement in Costume design and also Best Actor in a Leading Role - Sadiq Daba. The movie which was directed by Kunle Afolayan is one of the most loved Nigerian productions of the year and is also available abroad on on-demand platforms such as Netflix. Also, the award for Best Comedy Film went to '30 days in Atlanta’ by AY the Comedian, which was successfully premiered and continues to be  distributed both home and abroad.

Nigerian sweetheart, thespian and producer, Kemi Lala Akindoju won the award for Best Young/Promising Actor, jointly with Ugandan Hassan Spike Insingoma, for their roles in ‘Dazzling Mirage’ and ‘Boda Boda Thieves’ respectively. Watch Kemi Lala's Interview here.

Nigeria won two other awards for Best Animation (Legacies of Rubies) and Best First Feature Film by a Director (Gone Too Far).

Other popular winners were 'iNumber Number' of South Africa and Timbuktu of Mauritania. Special Jury Prize went to Le President (Cameroon) and Triangle: Going to America (Ethiopia).

‘Film makers of African descent’ were also honoured in the Wall of Fame category. These were Horace Ovi, Harry Belafonte, Melvine Van Pebbles and Tony Verne. Posthumous awards were given to Late Oronto Douglas for his fervent support of Nollywood and Ghanaian, Cofie Ammuako-Annan. Special recognition was also given to MNET Africa Magic for ‘its role in showcasing and investing in Africa’s creative industry through its African content channels in the last 10 years’; and also Kingsley Ogoro and his Klink Studios for the support of ‘the creative industry with equipment for over 30 years’.

The African Movie Industry has witnessed significant improvement and some producers have distinguished themselves by ensuring their works are up to international standard. However, the problem of piracy still remains and some winners such as Kunle Afolayan and AY the Comedian have had to deal with the piracy of their works. It is hoped that Nigerian Copyright Commission will invest more in ensuring that the piracy problem is more thoroughly dealt with through more frequent raids of 'piracy centres', prosecution and a monitoring and enforcement procedure for online piracy.
